Our Rally Story

Growing up in Kenya there is nothing we both wanted more then to be part of the then safari rally which was one of the FIA rounds of the World Rally Championships. The aura and buzz created by the safari rally in those days is difficult to explain you just had to be there to experience it. So for both of us actually sitting in a rally car is a dream come true.

Our first rally together was in AUGUST 1993 where we took part in an East African motorsport club organized training rally. In those days training rallies did not require you to even have a roll cage. The rally was run on roads around the ngong town area. We finished in a completely standard B11 Nissan which was also Leo's office car so we couldn't exactly kill it. .

The VW Golf GTI

The car we use is an old car with an interesting history. The car was originally brought to Kenya by the VW works team for the safari rally around 1985-1987. The car was probably driven by Erwin Weber. After its use by the works team the car was sold to Ketan Somaia who rallied it for many years in the main Kenya national rally championship. The car was acquired by Alfir Khan around the turn of the century. Khan used the car rather successfully by winning the F2 championship of 2004. In many rallies in Alfir's able hands the car often beat much newer and more powerful cars.
